Abeid Amani Karume (4 Agustus 1905 – 7 April 1972)[1] adalah politikus Zanzibar yang menjabat sebagai Presiden pertama setelah revolusi yang berujung pada penggulingan Jamshid bin Abdullah, Sultan Zanzibar terakhir yang berkuasa, pada Januari 1964. Tiga bulan kemudian, Zanzibar bersatu dengan Tanganyika dan membentuk negara Tanzania, dengan Karume sebagai wakil presiden bersama Julius Nyerere. Dia merupakan ayah dari mantan presiden Zanzibar, Amani Abeid Karume.[2][3]

Kehidupan awal

Diduga lahir di desa Mwera, Zanzibar pada tahun 1905, Karume memiliki sedikit pendidikan formal dan bekerja sebagai pelaut sebelum terjun ke dunia politik. Ia pernah dengan bangga menjabat sebagai pendayung tongkang upacara Sultan.[4]
