Balaur adalah sebuah genus dinosaurus theropoda yang berasal dari wilayah yang sekarang adalah Romania pada periode Kapur Akhir. Genus ini adalah sebuah genus monotipik, dengan satu-satunya spesies ialah Balaur bondoc, setelah balaur, seekor naga dari folklor Rumania (pengucapan bahasa Rumania: [baˈla.ur][1]). Nama spesifiknya, bondoc (pengucapan bahasa Rumania: [bonˈdok][2]) berarti "kekar". Sehingga nama Balaur bondoc berarti "naga kekar" dalam bahasa Rumania. Namanya merujuk kepada muskulatur besar yang Balaur punya bila dibandingkan dengan kerabat-kerabatnya. Genus ini, yang pertamakali dideskripsikan pada Agustus 2010, diketahui dari dua kerangka parsial (termasuk spesimen tipenya).

Fosil-fosil dari dinosaurus ini ditemukan di Formasi Densuș-Ciula dan Sebeș dari periode Kapur Rumania, yang merupakan letak Pulau Hațeg,[3] yaitu sebuah pulau subtropis di Laut Tethys yang mana dinosaurus disana biasa mengalami sindrom pulau (seperti dwarfisme pulau dan sebagainya).
