Klub ini dibentuk pada tahun 1888, setelah sebelumnya telah dikenal sebagai New Barnet FC (1885-1888) dan Woodville FC (1882-1885). Dua klub tersebut dibentuk oleh para mantan siswa dari Cowley College dan Lyonsdown Collegiate School. Mereka dikenal sebagai "The Hillmen" dan bermain di Barnet New sebelum pindah ke Ravenscroft Park di Queens Road pada tahun 1889.
