Harau adalah salah satu anggota famili Bathylagidae, kelompok Argentiniformes yang berbeda.
Harau adalah ikan laut yang ditemukan di perairan dalam di seluruh lautan, jumlahnya mencapai 1.500 m (4.900 ft) secara mendalam. Mereka adalah ikan kecil, tumbuh hingga 25 cm (9,8 in) panjang. Mereka memakan plankton, khususnya krill.
