Kehidupan pribadi

Altman lahir di The Bronx, New York. Ia lulusan Sekolah Drama Yale.[1][2] Ia berlatar belakang Yahudi.[3] Ia menikah dengan Darcy M. McGraw, seorang pengacara dan profesor hukum sejak tahun 1982. Mereka memiliki satu anak. Putrinya, Anna, meninggal pada 11 November 2013 di New Haven, Connecticut, pada usia 24 tahun.[4]
