Caffè Americano atau Amerikano[1] adalah minuman kopi yang dibuat dengan mencampurkan satu seloki espresso dengan air panas.[2] Air panas yang digunakan dalam minuman ini adalah sebanyak 6 hingga 8 ons.[3] Nama dari kopi ini pada awalnya merupakan ejekan bagi orang-orang Amerika yang meminta agar espresso mereka dibuat menjadi lebih encer.[3]

Asal kata

Istilah Americano yang bermakna orang Amerika ini berasal dari bahasa Spanyol Amerika 1970-an atau dari bahasa Italia.[4][5] Sementara itu istilah caffè Americano sendiri adalah istilah dari bahasa Italia yang berati kopi Amerika.[6]

Sejarah penemuan istilah ini tidak begitu jelas, tetapi satu versi menyatakan bahwa istilah ini berasal dari Perang Dunia II ketika tentara Amerika di Italia mencampurkan air panas ke dalam espreso hingga mencapai takaran kopi yang biasa mereka minum.[7][8]

Adapun versi lainnya lebih awal dari itu. Somerset Maugham dalam noverlnya Ashenden: Or the British Agent (1928) menceritakan tokoh protagonisnya memesan dan meminum suatu minuman bernama americano di Naples selama Perang Dunia I, tetapi tidak ada cukup keterangan apakah americano yang dimaksud adalah minuman yang sama dengan yang biasa dikenal sekarang.[9]
