Catatan sipil

Di banyak negara, kejadian-kejadian penting dalam hidup (kelahiran, kematian, pernikahan) harus didaftarkan ke catatan sipil. Di Inggris hal ini dimulai pada 1837. Kelahiran harus didaftarkan dalam waktu 42 hari, kematian dalam waktu 5 hari kecuali ada penyelidikan. Di Amerika Serikat, catatan sipil diurus oleh Office of Vital Statistics atau Office of Vital Records di setiap negara bagian. Di Indonesia hal ini dilakukan oleh Dinas Kependudukan dan Catatan Sipil di setiap Kabupaten, Kota, dan provinsi.
