Coleochaetophyceae adalah kelas alga karofit yang memiliki kekerabatan dekat dengan tumbuhan darat (hanya Zygnematophyceae yang berhubungan lebih dekat dengannya).[2] Saat ini diketahui sekitar 35 spesies, sebagian besar hidup di perairan tawar sebagai organisme perifitik, menempel pada permukaan tumbuhan air, batu kerikil, atau bahkan plastik di zona litoral dangkal danau-danau air tawar.[3][4]

Organisme ini berukuran kecil (kurang dari 200 μm), berbentuk cakram atau berfilamen, dan memiliki organisasi multiseluler sejati dengan cara reproduksi seksual maupun aseksual. Struktur cakramnya tidak pernah berkembang melampaui organisasi dua dimensi.[5] Mitogenomnya tercatat sebagai organel paling kaya intron di antara semua alga streptofit.[6]

Kelas ini hanya mencakup satu ordo, yakni Coleochaetales,[7] yang di dalamnya terdapat satu famili tunggal, yaitu Coleochaetaceae.
