Cryptomonas borealis adalah spesies alga kriptomonad.[1] Selnya berbentuk oval tidak beraturan, seolah-olah memiliki undulasi (gelombang). Mulut kerongkongan (gullet) berukuran besar, memberikan tampilan "mulut ikan" pada bagian anterior sel.[2]

Deskripsi

Panjang C. borealis berkisar antara 30 hingga 58 µm. Spesies ini memiliki dua kloroplas yang warnanya bervariasi dari kecokelatan hingga hijau zaitun. Ia dapat memiliki satu hingga tiga badan Maupas. Vakuola kontraktil terletak di dekat rostrum apikal. Nukleus terletak di bagian posterior. Spesies ini tidak memiliki pirenoid. Sebagai gantinya, kloroplasnya memiliki banyak butiran pati berbentuk heksagonal atau oval. Kerongkongannya memanjang hingga sekitar setengah panjang tubuh sel.[2]

C. borealis secara morfologis berkerabat dengan C. curvata dan C. platyuris. Salah satu sinonimnya adalah C. skujae.[1][3]
