Deania adalah satu dari dua genus ikan hiu dalam famili Centrophoridae. Anggotanya berhabitat di Perairan Atlantik Utara, Namun di perairan Spanyol Utara hanya spesies Deania calcea (hiu botol monyong) dan Deania profundorum yang diketahui.[2]

Spesiesnya memiliki dua sirip punggung dengan duri beralur kuat, tidak ada sirip dubur, dan lekukan sub terminal yang kuat pada sirip ekor. Biasanya karakteristik identifikasi seperti dentikel kulit dan gigi telah digunakan untuk membedakan antar spesies ikan elasmobranchii.[2]
