Demielinasi adalah gejala robeknya selubung mielin pada neuron. Hal ini menyebabkan gangguan aliran sinyal saraf individu yang terinfeksi, menyebabkan gangguan perasaan, gerakan, kesadaran, atau fungsi lainnya yang bergantung pada sistem saraf.
Beberapa penyakit yang menimbulkan demielinasi dapat disebabkan oleh genetika, infeksi, reaksi autoimun, dan faktor lainnya yang tidak diketahui. Demielinasi merupakan cacat yang biasa ditemui pada kelainan sistem saraf pusat, seperti sklerosis multipel, ensefalomielitis, sklerosis lateral amiotrofik, leukodistrofi metakromatik dan adrenal, leukoensefalitis multifokal progresif, sindrom Guillain-Barre,[1] mielitis melintang, sindrom Devic.
