Desulfotomaculum adalah sebuah genus bakteri Gram-positif yang memiliki sifat pereduksi sulfat, artinya, menggunakan sulfat untuk oksidasi, alih-alih oksigen. Pada 2005, spesies baru Desulfotomaculum ditemukan di sebuah bekas pertambangan emas di Mponeng, dekat Johannesburg, Afrika Selatan, dan ditemukan dapat melangsungkan hidup tanpa tergantung (secara langsung ataupun tidak langsung) terhadap fotosintesis.[2]
Desulfomaculum adalah bakteri anaerob yang berbentuk batang lurus atau melengkung dengan spora terminal hingga subterminal[3]
