Kontras putih dan hitam (terang dan gelap, siang dan malam) memiliki tradisi pemakaian kiasan yang panjang, sejak zaman Timur Dekat Kuno, khususnya Table of Opposites karya Pythagorean. Dalam budaya Barat serta Konghucu, kontras tersebut melambangkan dikotomi moral baik dan jahat.[1]
