Elektrotrof adalah mikroorganisme yang dapat menerima elektron yang diperlukan untuk pertumbuhannya dari terminal elektroda (catu daya) atau penyumbang elektron lainnya.[1]

Bakteri kemolitoautotrofik Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, yang hidup di ventilasi hidrotermal laut, telah terbukti menunjukkan perilaku elektrotrofik dalam eksperimen.[2] Secara khusus, bakteri ini mengalihkan sumber elektron untuk asimilasi karbon dari ion Fe2+ yang dapat berdifusi ke elektrode dengan syarat arus listrik merupakan satu-satunya sumber energi dan elektron yang tersedia.[3]
