Enterotoksin

Vibrio cholerae bakteri penghasil enterotoksin.

Enterotoksin adalah eksotoksin yang aktivitasnya memengaruhi usus halus, sehingga umumnya menyebabkan sekresi cairan secara berlebihan ke dalam rongga usus, menyebabkan diare dan muntah-muntah.[1] Enterotoksin diproduksi oleh berbagai macam bakteri, termasuk organisme penyebab keracunan makanan seperti Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Clostridium perfringens, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteriditis, dan Vibrio cholerae. Enterotoksin yang dihasilkan oleh V. cholerae adalah penyebab kolera.[2] Toksin tersebut akan mengaktifkan enzim siklik adenilase yang mengubah ATP menjadi cAMP sehingga cAMP menjadi berlebihan dan menyebabkan ion klorida serta bikarbonat dikeluarkan dalam jumlah besar dari sel mukosa ke dalam rongga usus.[1] Hal tersebut menyebabkan dehidrasi pada penderia kolera.[1] Gen yang mengkodekan enterotoksin kolera ada dua yaitu ctxA dan ctxB[1]
