Epididimis adalah saluran yang menghubungkan testikel dengan vas deferens dalam sistem reproduksi pria. Seluruh pejantan reptil, burung, dan mamalia memiliki saluran ini. Dalam manusia, terdapat sebuah epididimis yang berbentuk saluran sempit yang membelit, dengan panjang total hingga 6-7 meter.[1]
Fungsi Epididimis
Beberapa fungsi epididimis antara lain:[2]
- Transportasi spermatozoa, proses ini terjadi melalui kontraksi ritmik lapisan otot polos yang mengelilingi epididimis
- Penyimpanan sementara spermatozoa sebelum diejakulasikan dan tempat transit dari rete testis ke vas deferens.
- Penyerapan cairan dan pemekatan konsentrasi spermatozoa
- Melindungi spermatozoa selama transit dari kerusakan oleh lingkungan eksternal
- Tempat pematangan spermatozoa, proses aktivasi, peningkatan motilitas dan kapasitas fertilisasi.
