George Raymond Richard Martin^[3] (nama lahir George Raymond Martin; lahir 20 September 1948), sering disebut sebagai George R. R. Martin,^[4] adalah seorang novelis dan penulis cerpen asal Amerika dalam genre fiksi fantasi, fiksi horor dan fiksi ilmiah, penulis naskah dan produser televisi. Ia dikenal karena serial novel fantasi epiknya, A Song of Ice and Fire, yang kemudian diadaptasi dalam serial HBO Game of Thrones (2011–2019). Martin bertugas sebagai salah satu produser eksekutif dari serial tersebut, dan juga membuat naskah untuk empat episode pada serial tersebut.

Kehidupan Awal dan Edukasi

George R.R. Martin lahir dan tumbuh besar di Bayonne, New Jersey. Ia merupakan anak tertua dari tiga bersaudara. Ayahnya adalah seorang buruh pelabuhan.^[5]

Sejak kecil, George R.R. Martin sudah tertarik pada fiksi limiah dan fantasi.^[6] Saat kecil, ia menjual kisah-kisah monster kepada anak-anak tetangganya. Saat masuk ke sekolah menengah, ia pun mulai menulis fiksi penggemar dari buku-buku komik yang ia buat, bahkan mulai menciptakan pahlawan-pahlawan super baru.^[5]

Geroge R.R Martin bersekolah di Martist High School, sebuah sekolah Katolik khusus pria. Selama bersekolah, Martin tergabung ke dalam tim catur dan ikut serta dalam klub koran sekolah.^[5] Setelah lulus dari sekolah menengah pada tahun 1966, Martin melanjutkan kuliahnya ke Northwestern University. Ia memperoleh gelar sarjana jurnalisme di tahun 1970 dan gelar master jurnalismenya pada tahun 1971.^[6]

Pada 1973 hingga 1976, George R.R. Martin sempat menolak untuk melaksanakan wajib militer selama Perang Vietnam, kemudian melaksanakan wajib militer alternatif dengan membantu sebuah organisasi bantuan hukum di Chicago bernama Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation. Pada saat itu, ia mencari nafkah dengan menyelenggarakan turnamen-turnamen catur serta menulis fiksi pendek.^[5]^[6] Ia kemudian menjadi profesor universitas selama dua tahun di Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa.^[5]

Karya Sastra

Geroge R.R. Martin menjual karya pertamanya di tahun 1971, yang berjudul "The Hero" ke sebuah majalah bernama Galaxy. Ia kemudian menulis koleksi-koleksi cerita pendek, salah satunya adalah A Song for Lya and Others pada tahun 1974. Karya ini kemudian memenangkan Hugo Award.^[5]^[6]

Pada tahun 1977, Martin mempublikasikan sebuah novel fiksi pertamanya yang berjudul Dying of the Light yang mengisahkan festival disebuah planet yang mendekati kiamat. Pada tahun 1981, ia menulis sebuah novelette berjudul Sandkings. Karya ini juga memperoleh Hugo Award dan Nebula Award. Pada tahun yang sama, ia juga menerbitkan sebuah novel berjudul Windhaven. Ia kemudian menerbitkan sebuah novel bertema tentang vampir berjudul Fevre Dream pada tahun 1982 dan sebuah novel horor berjudul The Armageddon Rag pada 1983.^[6]

Martin menulis sebuah seri novel berjudul A Game of Thrones pada tahun 1996 yang awalnya dimaksudkan untuk menjadi sebuah trilogi. Novel ini mengisahkan tentang Tujuh Kerajaan di Benua Westeros. Novel ini dipenuhi intrik politik dan perang untuk merebut takhta. Ia kemudian menerbitkan lanjutan novel ini, yaitu A Clash of Kings pada tahun 1999, A Storm of Swords pada tahun 2000, A Feast for Crows pada tahun 2005, dan A Dance with Dragons pada tahun 2011. Seri novel ini dinamai A Song of Ice and Fire. Seri ini diadaptasi menjadi seri televisi oleh HBO.^[6]

Selain menulis, Martin juga menjadi editor beberapa antologi fiksi ilmiah dan fantasi. Ia menulis pula sebuah novella berjudul The Princess and The Queen; or, The Blacks and The Greens yang tergabung dalam volume Dangerous Women pada 2013. Ia juga menulis novella lainnya seperti A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms pada 2014, Fire and Blood tahun 2018, semuanya merupakan novella dari seri A Song of Ice and Fire.^[6]

Karya Televisi

George R.R. Martin sempat menulis beberapa skenario televisi. Pada 1987-1990, ia menjadi penulis skenario seri televisi Beauty and the Beast, kemudian menjadi produser seri tersebut, meski mengalami kegagalan. Martin kemudian sempat berkontribusi untuk menulis skenario beberapa episode seri Game of Thrones. Salah satu skenario yang ia tulis sempat memperoleh Hugo Award pada 2013 sebagai presentasi pendek dramatis yang terbaik. Martin juga sempat turut serta dalam pembuatan seri prekuel Game of Thrones, yaitu House of the Dragon pada tahun 2022 serta menjadi produser eksekutifnya.^[6]
