"Jesus of Suburbia" adalah salah satu lagu karya band Green Day. Lagu ini dirilis sebagai singel kelima dan terakhir dari album ketujuh mereka, American Idiot. Versi asli lagu ini terdiri dari 5 bagian dan memiliki durasi selama 9 menit. Karena dirasa terlalu panjang dan kurang cocok untuk pemutaran radio dan TV, maka lagu ini diedit menjadi hanya 6½ menit. Singel ini telah terjual sebanyak 205.000 copy pada Juli 2010[1]

Latar belakang

American Idiot merupakan sebuah album yang menceritakan kisah seorang tokoh sentral bernama Jesus of Suburbia, seorang anti-hero yang diciptakan oleh Billie Joe Armstrong. Album ini dibuat dengan sudut pandang remaja Amerika pinggiran kota kelas menengah ke bawah yang dibesarkan dengan pola makan "soda pop dan Ritalin".[2] Jesus membenci kotanya dan orang-orang yang dekat dengannya, jadi dia pergi meninggalkan kotanya.[3]

"Jesus of Suburbia" adalah lagu kedua yang dalam American Idiot. Armstrong mengatakan bahwa ia membutuhkan "waktu yang lama" untuk menulis lagu tersebut. Dirnt mengatakan bahwa lagu itu dibuat dari latihan rutin band mereka.[4] Lagu tersebut merupakan kelanjutan dari keinginan Armstrong untuk membuat versi modern dari "Bohemian Rhapsody".[5]
