Permainan Judi China secara teknis dapat dikelompokkan menjadi dua kategori besar: lotere dan permainan kartu.[1] Dalam hal permainan lotere, selalu ada campur tangan seorang bandar, yang mengelola permainan, mengundi, mengumpulkan taruhan dan lazimnya memungut presentase tertentu dari semua pihak.

Rumah Judi China di Batavia dibuka sejak tahun 1620, izin diberikan kepada seseorang Kapitan Cina. Kemudian dikeluarkan larangan bahwa rumah judi tidak boleh dibuka pada hari minggu., hari raya dan hari peribadatan.
