American Pygmy adalah ras kambing akondroplastik (kambing kerdil) asal Amerika Serikat. Ras ini berukuran kecil, bertubuh kompak, dan berpostur kekar. Seperti Kurcaci Nigeria, ras ini berasal dari kelompok Kurcaci Afrika Barat di Afrika Barat.[3]:355[4]:35

Antara tahun 1930 hingga 1960, kambing jenis ini diimpor ke Amerika Serikat untuk digunakan sebagai hewan kebun binatang atau untuk penelitian. Sebagian kemudian dipelihara dan dikembangbiakkan sebagai hewan pendamping, hingga akhirnya ditetapkan sebagai ras resmi pada tahun 1975.[3]:355[5]:40

Ras ini juga dikenal dengan sebutan Pygmy atau Pygmy Afrika. Ras tersebut berbeda dan terpisah dari ras Pygmy asal Britania Raya.

Karakteristik

Kambing Pygmy Amerika berukuran kecil dan kekar, dengan tulang yang kuat. Tinggi pada bagian layu biasanya berada dalam kisaran 40 hingga 50 cm (16 hingga 20 in), dengan bobot sekitar 25 hingga 40 kg (55 hingga 90 pon).[3]:355

Dalam standar ras, diakui tujuh variasi warna: karamel dengan tanda hitam, karamel dengan tanda cokelat, agouti cokelat, agouti abu-abu, agouti hitam, hitam dengan tanda putih, serta hitam polos.[6]

Ras ini bersifat poliestrus, subur, dan cepat matang – anak kambing dapat mencapai kematangan seksual pada usia dua bulan. Masa kehamilan biasanya berlangsung antara 145 hingga 153 hari.[7]
