Kebakaran Besar Chicago adalah sebuah kebakaran besar yang terjadi pada 8 Oktober sampai tanggal 10 Oktober 1871. Api menewaskan hingga 300 orang, menghancurkan sekitar 3,3 mil persegi (9 km2) dari Chicago, Illinois, dan menyebabkan lebih dari 100.000 penduduk kehilangan tempat tinggal.[3]
Bantuan mengalir ke kota dari dekat dan jauh setelah kebakaran. Kota Chicago memperbaiki kode bangunan untuk menghentikan penyebaran api yang cepat, dan membangun kembali dengan cepat ke standar yang lebih tinggi. Sumbangan dari Britania Raya memacu pendirian Perpustakaan Umum Chicago, sistem perpustakaan umum gratis, berlawanan dengan swasta, biaya untuk perpustakaan keanggotaan umum sebelum kebakaran.
