Kelompok peretas adalah komunitas informal yang mulai muncul pada awal 1980-an, seiring dengan meningkatnya ketersediaan komputer pribadi dan akses terhadap sistem komputasi pribadi.
Ringkasan
Sebelum periode tersebut, istilah peretas umumnya digunakan untuk menyebut penggemar komputer. Kelompok peretas kemudian muncul sebagai sarana membangun identitas dan reputasi, sebagian dipengaruhi oleh eksposur media. Perkembangan ini terjadi sebelum diberlakukannya regulasi yang luas mengenai kejahatan komputer. Kelompok peretas berfungsi sebagai wadah pertukaran informasi, sumber daya, dan pembelajaran antaranggotanya.[1] Afiliasi dengan kelompok tertentu juga dapat meningkatkan kredibilitas individu. Nama kelompok sering kali bersifat satir terhadap perusahaan besar, pemerintah, aparat penegak hukum, atau tokoh kriminal, serta kerap menggunakan gaya penulisan atau ortografi yang tidak baku.[2]
