Dua substrat enzim ini adalah klorofilida a dan fitil difosfat; dua produknya adalah klorofil a dan difosfat. Enzim yang sama dapat bekerja pada klorofilida b untuk membentuk klorofil b dan demikian pula untuk klorofil d dan f.[1]

Nama sistematis kelas enzim ini adalah klorofilida-a:fitil-difosfat fitiltransferase. Reaksi ini merupakan langkah terakhir dari lintasan biosintesis lengkap klorofil dari asam glutamat.[2][3]
