Setelah menjabat selama delapan tahun, Paus Benediktus XV meninggal pada 22 Januari 1922 karena pneumonia. Pada waktu kematiannya, Dewan Kardinal memiliki anggota berjumlah 60 orang. Namun, pada hari yang sama, Enrique Almaraz y Santos, Uskup Agung Toledo, wafat, meninggalkan 60 dewan kardinal untuk menentukan pengganti Paus Benediktus.

53 dari 60 kardinal berkumpul di Kapel Sistina pada 2 Februari. Kardinal José María Martín de Herrera y de la Iglesia, Giuseppe Prisco dan Lev Skrbenský z Hříště tidak ikut karena alasan kesehatan, sementara empat kardinal non-Eropa – William Henry O'Connell dari Boston, Denis Dougherty dari Philadelphia, Louis-Nazaire Bégin dari Kota Québec dan Joaquim Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcanti dari São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro – tidak menghadiri konklaf pada waktu itu.
