Mitchell Grass Downs adalah kawasan ekologi padang rumput tropis dan subtropis, sabana, dan semak belukar di timur laut Australia. Daerah ini sebagian besar merupakan padang rumput tak berpohon, yang ditandai oleh rumput Mitchell (Astrebla spp.).[2][3][4][5][6]
Lokasi dan deskripsi
Ekoregion ini dibatasi di utara dan timur oleh ekoregion sabana tropis – sabana tropis Victoria Plains di timur laut, sabana tropis Carpentaria di utara, sabana Dataran Tinggi Einasleigh di timur laut, dan sabana tropis Brigalow di timur. Ekoregion yang lebih gersang terletak di barat dan selatan – gurun Great Sandy-Tanami di barat daya, Gurun Simpson di selatan, dan semak belukar mulga Australia Timur di tenggara.[2]
Ekoregion ini mencakup tiga IBRA region – Mitchell Grass Downs, Mount Isa Inlier, dan Desert Uplands.[2]
Iklim
Iklimnya tropis dan semi-gersang. Curah hujan tahunan rata-rata bervariasi di seluruh ekoregion, dari 350 mm hingga 750 mm. Di sebagian besar ekoregion, curah hujan bersifat musiman, bertepatan dengan monsun musim panas. Curah hujan menjadi kurang musiman ke arah tenggara.[2]
Flora
Vegetasinya sebagian besar terdiri dari rumput bersama dengan bunga liar dan semak rendah, termasuk Queensland bluebush (Chenopodium auricomum). Terdapat hutan kayu akasia kering yang tersebar, didominasi oleh gidgee (Acacia cambagei). Aliran air mendukung hutan kayu red river gum (Eucalyptus camuldulensis), coolibah (E. coolabah), dan paperbark (Melaleuca spp.).
Desert Uplands memiliki hutan kayu kering Eucalyptus populnea, E. melanophloia, dan E. similis. Hutan kayu terbuka rendah dari snappy gum (Eucalyptus leucophloia), Cloncurry box (E. leucophylla), dan silver box (E. pruinosa) tumbuh di Mount Isa Inlier.[2]
