Nepenthes aenigma adalah kantong semar tropis yang ditemukan di dua gunung di Ilocos Norte, sebuah provinsi di pulau Luzon, Filipina, di mana tanaman ini tumbuh pada ketinggian sekitar 1200 m di atas permukaan laut.[1] Spesies ini dikenal karena tumbuh di antara vegetasi lebat di tempat yang sangat teduh.[1] Tanaman ini menunjukkan kemiripan dengan N. burkei dan N. ventricosa.[2]

Deskripsi

Tanaman ini sebagian besar tidak berbulu, namun memiliki bulu-bulu kecil berwarna cokelat pada kantong yang belum berkembang. Tanaman ini juga memiliki tunas yang dorman dan terletak di atas setiap daun. Spesies ini telah diamati memangsa semut, laba-laba, larva nyamuk, dan kecoa dalam berbagai tahap pembusukan.

Taksonomi

Spesies ini pertama kali ditemukan pada bulan April 2002 oleh ornitolog Herman Nuytemans[2] dan baru ditemukan kembali di alam liar lebih dari 10 tahun kemudian.[3] Sebelum deskripsi formalnya, spesies ini dikenal dengan nama sementara "Nepenthes sp. Luzon".[1]

Etimologi

Epitet spesifik aenigma berasal dari bahasa Latin yang berarti "enigma" atau "teka-teki" dan merujuk pada "preferensi ekologis yang sangat tidak biasa" dari spesies ini, yaitu tumbuh di tempat yang sangat teduh.[1]
