Opera Kiev secara resmi didirikan pada musim panas 1867, dan merupakan yang tertua ketiga di Ukraina, setelah Opera Odessa dan Opera Lviv. Sekarang, Perusahaan Opera Kiev tampil di Gedung Opera Nasional Ukraina dinamai Taras Shevchenko di Kiev.
Ketika Kiev mulai tumbuh dan dengan berakhirnya Perang Dunia I, Opera Kiev menempati tempat khusus di Uni Soviet dan dunia. Kyiv Opera Theatre dianggap sebagai salah satu yang paling bergengsi di Ukraina dan Rusia. Kurt Adler adalah Konduktor Pertama dari 1933-1935.
