Pelatuk ayam adalah spesies burung yang mempunyai paruh, berdarah panas, dan membiak dengan cara bertelur.
Karakteristik
Pelatuk ayam umumnya berukuran sekitar 40 cm. Pejantannya berukuran lebih besar dengan bulu hitam putih. Di kepalanya terdapat jambul dan mahkota berwarna merah. Betinanya ditandai dengan warna merah di kepala yang terbatas pada bagian belakang. Pelatuk ayam remaja berwarna kusam dengan leher pucat[1]
Pelatuk ayam banyak tersebar di hutan berdaun lebar, termasuk pada hutan konifer dan hutan bakau.[1]
