Primelephas adalah genus dari familia Elephantidae yang hidup dari masa Miosen hingga Pliosen. Genus ini diduga merupakan nenek moyang bersama mammoth dengan genera Loxodonta (gajah afrika) dan Elephas (gajah asia) yang berhubungan erat,mereka diperkirakan terpisah sekitar empat hingga enam juta tahun yang lalu.[1] Tidak seperti gajah, spesies dalam genus ini memiliki empat taring. Spesies tipe Primelephas, yaitu Primelephas gomphotheroides, dideskripsikan oleh Vincent Maglio pada tahun 1970. Primelephas korotorensis adalah satu-satunya spesies lain yang telah dimasukkan ke dalam genus ini.
