The book is an study of the social, religious, and economic life of American Indians, made under the auspices of the Institute of Social and Religious Research.

Ruth Muskrat Bronson (3 Oktober 1897 – 12 Juni 1982) adalah seorang penyair Cherokee, pendidik dan aktivis hak-hak India. Setelah menyelesaikan pendidikannya, Bronson menjadi Pejabat Pembina dan Penempatan pertama Biro Urusan India. Dia menjabat sebagai sekretaris eksekutif untuk Kongres Nasional Indian Amerika, yang didirikan pada tahun 1944, dan menciptakan layanan berita legislatif mereka.[1][2][3]

Setelah satu dekade bekerja di Washington, D.C., Bronson pindah ke Arizona. Di sana ia menjabat sebagai spesialis pendidikan kesehatan untuk Layanan Kesehatan India. Setelah pensiun dari pemerintah, ia menerima Penghargaan Layanan Oveta Culp Hobby dari Departemen Kesehatan, Pendidikan dan Kesejahteraan.
