Sabbatai Zevi

Sabbatai Zevi (שַׁבְּתַי צְבִי, ejaan lain: Sabbatai Ẓevi, Shabbetai Ẓevi, Shabbeṯāy Ṣeḇī, Sabbatai Sevi, Shabsai Tzvi, dan Sabetay Sevi dalam bahasa Turki) (1 Agustus 1626 – c. 17 September 1676[1]) adalah seorang Rabi Sefardim[2] dan kabalis yang menyatakan diri sebagai mesias Yahudi. Ia adalah pendiri pergerakan Sabbatean Yahudi.

Pada Februari 1666, setelah tiba di Istanbul, Sabbatai dipenjarakan atas perintah wazir agung Ahmed Köprülü; pada bulan September dalam tahun yang sama, Sabbatai diberikan pilihan antara masuk Islam atau hukuman mati, dan Sabbatai memilih masuk Islam. Berkat pilihannya ini, ia diberi hadiah uang oleh Kesultanan Utsmaniyah karena mematuhi rencana politik dan religius mereka.[3] Walaupun peristiwa ini mengguncang para pengikut Sabbatai, beberapa di antara mereka juga ikut masuk Islam; kurang lebih 300 keluarga mengikuti jejak Sabbatai, dan mereka kemudian dikenal dengan julukan Dönmeh.[4] Namun, walaupun mereka secara resmi masuk Islam, pada kenyataannya mereka tetap mengikuti ajaran agama Yahudi secara diam-diam.
