Sazerac adalah variasi Cognac atau koktail wiski versi New Orleans. Minuman ini dinamai dari Sazerac de Forge et Fils, yang merupakan merk brandi Cognac yang menjadi bahan utama minuman ini.[1] Secara tradisional, sazerac merupakan gabungan Cognac atau wiski rye dengan absinthe, Peychaud's Bitters, dan gula, walaupun wiski bourbon atau Herbsaint kadang-kadang dapat digunakan sebagai bahan pengganti. Terdapat klaim bahwa koktail ini adalah koktail tertua di Amerika[2] dan berasal dari New Orleans pada masa sebelum meletusnya Perang Saudara, walaupun sejarawan minuman David Wondrich membantah klaim ini[3] dan penggunaan kata "koktail" dalam publikasi-publikasi Amerika dapat ditilik kembali pada awal abad ke-19.[4]
