Pristolepis grootii, umumnya dikenal sebagai ikan sepatung , adalah ikan asli sungai pulau Sumatra, Bangka, Belitung dan Kalimantan, dan Thailand di Indonesia. Ini adalah bagian dari spesies ikan Air Tawar pertama di Indonesia Barat dan Sulawesi yang tercatat pada 31 Desember 1991 bersama dengan 963 spesies lainnya. Penelitian lebih lanjut mengarah pada penemuan 79 spesies ikan lain di daerah tersebut. Pada tanggal 31 Mei 1996, penghapusan dan penambahan dilakukan untuk mengungkap total 1.032 spesies ikan yang diketahui di daerah tersebut.[3] Nama khusus menghormati naturalis dan etnografer Belanda Cornelis de Groot van Embden (1817-1896).[4]
