Mata uang tersebut terbagi dalam 100 senti (Somalia, juga سنت), cent (Inggris) atau centesimi (Inggris).

Shilling telah menjadi mata uang di sebagian Somalia sejak 1921, saat shilling Afrika Timur diperkenalkan kepada protektorat Somaliland Britania. Setelah kemerdekaan pada 1960, somalo dari Somaliland Italia dan shilling Afrika Timur (yang memiliki nilai yang setara) digantikan pada 1962 oleh shilling Somalia.
