Dalam ilmu fonetika, cara pengucapan dapat dibagi menjadi dua kelas besar, yaitu hambatan dan sonoran. Sebuah sonoran atau disebut juga resonan adalah sebuah suara yang diartikulasikan dengan laju udara yang sinambung dan tanpa turbulensi melewati rongga hidung atau rongga mulut.[1] Artikulasi sonoran melibatkan penggunaan energi yang lebih besar dari hambatan. Oleh karena itu, sangat umum sonoran memiliki karakteristik bersuara.[2]
