Southern Metropolis Daily (SMD) adalah surat kabar tabloid nirlaba yang berlokasi di kota Guangzhou, Tiongkok,[1] dan peredarannya meliputi seluruh wilayah Guangdong dan Delta Sungai Mutiara.[1] SMD merupakan bagian dari Nanfang Media Group, yang berada di bawah pengawasan Komite Provinsi Guangdong dari Partai Komunis Tiongkok (PKT). Surat kabar ini terbit setiap hari, dengan 72 halaman dan beberapa bagian yang berkaitan dengan produk konsumen, urusan internasional, olahraga, dan topik lain yang menjadi kepentingan umum.[2]

SMD terkenal karena pelaporan investigasinya. SMD telah terlibat dalam banyak skandal dan kontroversi. Kontroversi yang paling terkenal adalah penerbitan 'insiden Sun Zhigang'[3] yang mengakibatkan pencabutan undang-undang pemulangan paksa.[3] Penerbitan ini juga mengakibatkan pemenjaraan dan penyiksaan jurnalis SMD Cheng Yizhong, Li Minying, dan Yu Huafeng.[2]

Moto SMD adalah "menulis untuk rakyat".[2] Pada tahun 2005, Cheng Yizhong merupakan pemenang Penghargaan Kebebasan Pers Dunia UNESCO/Guillermo Cano atas perlawanannya terhadap undang-undang sensor Tiongkok dan korupsi polisi.[4][5]
