Square Co., Ltd. dulu merupakan sebuah perusahaan permainan video Jepang yang didirikan tahun 1986 oleh Masafumi Miyamoto dan Hironobu Sakaguchi.
Permainan-permainan pertama Square dirilis untuk Nintendo Family Computer (juga dikenal dengan "Famicom" dan secara internasional dikenal dengan Nintendo Entertainment System) dan Famicom Disk System. Permainan-permainan pertamanya tidak begitu sukses dan pada tahun 1987 perusahaan ini menghadapi kemungkinan bangkrut. Pada tahun yang sama, pegawai Square Hironobu Sakaguchi ditugaskan untuk menciptakan sebuah permainan yang mungkin jadi adalah permainan terakhir Square.
