Taman Romawi

Taman Romawi dan hortikultura ornamental menjadi sangat dikembangkan di bawah peradaban Romawi, dan berlangsung dari 150 SM sampai 350 M.[1] Taman Lucullus (Horti Lucullani), di Bukit Pincian, Roma, memperkenalkan taman Persia ke Eropa pada sekitar tahun 60 SM. Taman tersebut dipandang sebagai tempat perdamaian dan tranquilitas, sebuah teman perlindungan dari kehidupan perkotaan, dan teman yang diisi dengan pengartian keagamaan dan simbolis. Kala budaya Romawi berkembang dan menjadi sangat dipengaruhi oleh peradaban asing, pemakaian taman diperluas.
Sejarah, fungsi dan gaya taman Romawi diselidiki lewat riset arkeologi dan arkeobotani, terutama yang berada di Pompeii, sumber-sumber sastra, dan lukisan tembok dan mozaik di rumah-rumah.[2]
