Grup mineral tantalit [(Fe, Mn)Ta2O6] menjadi sumber utama unsur kimia tantalum, yaitu sejenis logam yang tahan korosi. Secara kimiawi mineral ini mirip dengan kolumbit, dan keduanya biasa dikelompokkan bersama sebagai sebuah mineral semi-tunggal bernama koltan atau "kolumbit-tantalit" pada banyak panduan mineral. Namun, tantalit memiliki massa jenis relatif yang lebih besar daripada kolumbit (8.0+ bila dibandingkan dengan kolumbit dengan 5.2).
