Thylacosmilus adalah sebuah genus mamalia metatheria gigi-pedang yang hidup di Amerika Selatan dari kala Miosen Akhir hingga Pliosen. Meski hewan ini mirip dengan "kucing gigi-pedang", hewan tersebut tidak termasuk kedalam famili kucing Felidae, seperti Smilodon asal Amerika yang terkenal. Namun, Thylacosmilus termasuk kedalam Sparassodonta, yaitu sebuah kelompok yang berkerabat dekat dengan Marsupialia, dan hanya tampak seperti mamalia gigi-taring lainnya secara superfisial karena evolusi konvergen. Sebuah studi tahun 2005 menemukan bahwa kekuatan gigitan hewan ini dan Smilodon rendah, yang mengindikasikan bahwa teknik membunuh hewan gigi-taring berbeda dengan spesies-spesies hidup. Sisa-sisa Thylacosmilus telah ditemukan terkhususnya di Provinsi Catamarca, Entre Ríos dan La Pampa di Argentina utara.[1]
