Tupaiidae adalah salah satu dari dua famili tupai, famili lainnya yaitu Ptilocercidae. Famili ini mencakup tiga genera hidup dan 19 spesies hidup. Nama dari famili ini berasal dari kata bahasa Melayu tupai. Genus Urogale dibubarkan pada 2011 saat tupai mindanao dipindahkan ke Tupaia bedasarkan filogeni molekuler.[4]
Tidak seperti celurut, tupai memiliki otak yang lumayan besar untuk ukuran mereka. Meski beberapa penelitian telah menemukan tupai sebagai kerabat hidup terdekat primata, kebanyakan studi molekuler saat ini menemukan bahwa lemur terbang (kubung) sebagai takson saudari primata.[5]
