Wurtzit adalah mineral sulfida seng besi ((Zn,Fe)S), bentuk mineral sfalerit yang jarang dijumpai. Kandungan besinya bervariasi hingga delapan persen.[4] Ini berbentuk trimorf dengan matrait dan sfalerit.[1]
Wurtzit terbentuk pada deposit hidrotermal yang berhubungan dengan sfalerit, pirit, kalkopirit, barit dan markasit. Ini juga terjadi pada konkresi lempung-batu besi suhu rendah.[1]
Wurtzit pertama kali dijelaskan pada tahun 1861 untuk yang terjadi di Tambang San José, Kota Oruro, Provinsi Cercado, Departemen Oruro, Bolivia, dan diberi nama kimiawan Prancis Charles-Adolphe Wurtz.[2] Wurtzit terdistribusi luas. Di Eropa dilaporkan dari Příbram, Republik Ceko; Hesse, Jerman; dan Liskeard, Cornwall, Inggris. Di AS dilaporkan dari Litchfield County, Connecticut; Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana; di Frisco, Beaver County, Utah; dan dari distrik Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri.[1]
Struktur wurtzite
Kelompok wurtzit meliputi: Kadmoselit CdSe, Greenockite CdS, Mátraite ZnS dan Rambergit MnS, selain wurtzit.[5]
Struktur kristalnya disebut struktur kristal wurtzite, yang sesuai namanya. Struktur ini adalah bagian dari sistem kristal heksagonal dan terdiri dari atom-atom seng dan belerang yang terkoordinasi secara tetrahedral yang ditumpuk dalam pola ABABABABAB.
