Canadian basketball player (born 2001)
Laeticia Amihere (born July 10, 2001) is a Canadian professional basketball player for the Atlanta Dream of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She is also contracted with the Perth Lynx of the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). Her father is from the West African country of Ghana, while her mother hails from Ivory Coast. She played college basketball at South Carolina Gamecocks of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).[ 1]
College career
Amihere made her debut with the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team in the 2019–20 NCAA season.[ 2]
On March 30, 2021, Amihere broke a school record for most blocks in an NCAA Tournament game with 9 blocks against Texas Longhorns women's basketball . The South Carolina defense held Texas to only 34 points on 23% shooting.[ 3] [ 2]
Amihere scored a career-high 18 points against Oregon Ducks women's basketball on November 11, 2021.[ 2] On April 3, 2022, Amihere became an NCAA national champion. The South Carolina Gamecocks beat the University of Connecticut to win their second national title, the first since 2017, with a score of 64–49.[ 4]
Amihere's final college season came in 2022–23.[ 2]
Professional career
Atlanta Dream
Amihere was drafted by the Atlanta Dream with the eighth pick of the first round of the 2023 WNBA Draft .[ 5] She made her WNBA debut on 30 May 2023 against the Chicago Sky [ 6]
Perth Lynx
On September 18, 2024, Amihere signed with the Perth Lynx of the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) for the 2024–25 season .[ 7]
National team career
Junior national team career
Amihere has won gold at the 2015 FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship for Women as part of the junior team, and then bronze at the 2017 FIBA Under-19 Women's Basketball World Cup .[ 1]
Senior national team career
In June 2021, Amihere was rostered for Team Canada for 2021 FIBA Women's AmeriCup [ 6]
In July 2021, Amihere was named to Canada's 2020 Olympic team .[ 8] [ 9]
In September 2022, Amihere was rostered for Team Canada in the 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup [ 10]
Amihere competed for Canada at the 2024 Summer Olympics .[ 7]
