In 2021, John Sherman started talking openly about his desire for a move downtown [1]. Funding for the stadium would come from the Royals' ownership group, who plan to invest more than $1 billion in private funding for the project, and the passing of an April 2, 2024, election referendum for a 40-year, 3/8th-cent sales tax to help finance the new Royals ballpark and renovate Arrowhead Stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs.[2][3][4][5] This referendum was rejected by voters, leaving uncertainty as to the next steps for the Royals' and Chiefs' new stadiums.[6]
