Charakterystyka
Do rodzaju Achlya należy ponad 80 szeroko rozprzestrzenionych gatunków grzybów wodnych. Większość to gatunki koprofilne zasiedlające odchody zwierząt wodnych[2], niektóre to grzyby pasożytnicze ryb i ikry[3]. Wywołują u nich chorobę o nazwie saprolegnioza (pleśniawka)[4]. Kilka gatunków jest pasożytami ryżu[2].

Rodzaj Achlya utworzył Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck w 1823 r. Gatunkiem typowym jest Achlya prolifera Nees 1823[1]. Synonimy: Aplanes de Bary1888, Hydronema Carus ex Rchb. 1828, Pringsheimina Kuntze, 1891[6]:
