Składanie ofiary przed agalmą bóstwa (przerys monety Tauromenium)

Agalma (stgr. ’άγαλμα) – określenie stosowane w antyku dla kultowego wizerunku bóstwa lub poświęconego mu daru.

Słowem tym w starożytności klasycznej określano obiekt poświęcony bóstwu, dar wotywny, który dzięki wartości materialnej lub artystycznej, miał dodać bóstwu chwały – m.in. przedmioty i naczynia z metalu bądź wypalonej gliny, pinakes, płaskorzeźby itp. wytwory plastyki dużej i małej.

W antycznej grece termin ten występuje w znaczeniach: ozdoba, chluba; posąg, statua bóstwa, wizerunek; także: dar miły bogom[1], i pochodzi od ’άγαλλειν – zdobić, co z kolei łączy się z ’άγάλλομαι (’agállomai – być dumnym, wychwalać) +‎ -μα (-ma)[2]. Z. Węclewski wyjaśnia, że początkowo używano go w znaczeniu: ubiór, strój, ozdoba – obraz; później: obraz boga; obraz człowieka[3].

Znaczenia te objęły także pojęcie wotum, od V wieku p.n.e. przeniesione na posągi bóstw i jako używane dla określenia rzeźby świątynnej w ogóle[4][1].
