Miejscowość Buchtel była znana przede wszystkim jako wspólnota węgla kamiennego rozpoczętej przez syndykat, którego udziałowcem był John R. Buchtel (1820-1892). Przemysłowiec ten wykorzystał swoje zyski, aby założyć Buchtel College, później University of Akron[1].
