  • Dendrocoptes: gr. δενδρον dendron „drzewo”; κοπτω koptō „uderzać”[5].
  • Desertipicus: łac. desertum „pustynia”, od deserere „opuścić, porzucić”; picus „dzięcioł”[6]. Gatunek typowy: Desertipicus dorae G.L. Bates & Kinnear, 1935.
