Neal urodził się w Austin, w stanie Teksas. Podczas nauki na prywatnym uniwersytecie Texas Lutheran grał w piłkę nożną. Nie spodobał mu się jednak tamtejszy program piłkarski i zaczął trenować w MMA pod okiem trenera Sayifa Sauda[2].
