Gypsrodzaj ptaków z podrodziny jastrzębi (Accipitrinae) w rodzinie jastrzębiowatych (Accipitridae).

Rozmieszczenie geograficzne

Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Afryce i Eurazji[5].

Morfologia

Długość ciała 76–110 cm, rozpiętość skrzydeł 196–290 cm; masa ciała 3,5–12 kg; samice są większe i cięższe od samców[5].

Systematyka

Rodzaj zdefiniował w 1809 roku francuski przyrodnik, botanik i zoolog Marie Jules César Savigny w rozdziale zatytułowanym Systematyka ptaków Egiptu i Syrii, opublikowanym w publikacji o tytule Opis Egiptu, czyli Zbiór obserwacji i badań, które zostały przeprowadzone w Egipcie podczas wyprawy armii francuskiej[2]. Gatunkiem typowym jest (oznaczenie monotypowe) sęp płowy (G. fulvus).

Etymologia

  • Gyps: gr. γυψ gups, γυπος gupos ‘sęp’[6].
  • Vultur: łac. vultur, vulturis ‘sęp’[7]. Gatunek typowy (oznaczenie monotypowe): Vultur fulvus Selby, 1840 (= Vultur coprotheres J.R. Forster, 1798).
  • Pseudogyps: gr. ψευδος pseudos ‘fałszywy’; rodzaj Gyps Savigny, 1809[8]. Gatunek typowy (późniejsze oznaczenie[9]): Vultur bengalensis J.F. Gmelin, 1789.
